HCB Community Participation & Review Committee

Overview

The HCB Community Participation & Review Committee (CPRC) was established in 1997 under the HCB Waste Management Plan to 'receive, request and distribute information; consult the local community; participate in relevant processes; and review and advise the NSW Environment Protection Authority and Orica on relevant proposals, including monitoring and implementation of the management plan' (HCB Waste Management Plan, p17).

Members

The CPRC is made up of representatives of local community groups, local industries, independent experts, local and state governments and Orica. Dr Paul Brown is the Chair of the CPRC. The committee provides an inclusive consultation process that encourages members of the public to attend and become involved.

For further details, please refer to:

Ordinary CPRC meetings are held four times a year at Botany Town Hall. Orica updates the CPRC on the progress of HCB waste management projects at Botany Industrial Park (BIP) at these meetings. Orica aims to consult with local residential, industrial and commercial stakeholders and the broader community about specific issues relating to the management of HCB, through CPRC meetings, workshops and extraordinary CPRC meetings.

Meeting times and locations are included in the calendar on this website, and listed in Orica's regular columns in the Southern Courier and St George and Sutherland Shire Leader.

HCB waste management projects at BIP are:

  • Repackaging and Destruction of Stored HCB Waste Project;
  • Car Park Waste Encapsulation (CPWE) Remediation Project; and,
  • Other HCB related contamination on site.

Regular presenters at CPRC meetings include Orica, its consultants, and the Commonwealth Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA). DEWHA provides an update as the regulator of HCB waste export permits.

Orica issues a briefing paper to the CPRC prior to each meeting, which provides a summary of the latest developments with the HCB waste management projects at Botany. Presentations and briefing papers for CPRC meetings since 2005 are uploaded onto this website.  Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings.
