Activities - Independent Monitoring Committee (IMC)
Meetings
Combined IMC and Community Liaison Committee (CLC) Meetings
The IMC meets with the CLC as required. At these meetings, CLC members have the opportunity to ask the IMC questions about the progress of the Groundwater Cleanup Project and to seek the IMC's advice on technical matters associated with the Groundwater Treatment Plant (GTP) and its operations.
2009 to present
The CLC has not called for any combined meetings with the IMC during this period. Individual IMC members have attended CLC meetings from time to time on the request of the CLC.
2008
27 May
At this meeting, IMC members provided comments on suggested additional monitoring south of the Secondary containment Line (Task 16), the outcome of dioxin formation investigation at the GTP stack (Task 17), analysis of GTP inputs/outputs (Task 22), and advised on the need for ongoing validaiton audit and environmental reviews by Orica in accordance with Secion 5 of the Environment Protection Licence (Task 22).
|
2007
26 October
At this meeting, IMC members provided comments on Orica's various monitoring programs (Task 15), Orica's Temporary Aquifer Storage and Recovery proposal (Task 18), and potential health risks associated with washing fish at Penrhyn Estuary (Task 19).
2 May
At this meeting, the CLC asked for IMC feedback on the progress of Orica's Groundwater Cleanup Project (Tasks 12 & 13), and asked the IMC to consider the adequacy of Orica's monitoring programs (Task 15). As a result of the meeting, the IMC suggested further investigations on groundwater monitoring (Task 16) and on dioxin formation at the GTP (Tasks 14 & 17).

2006
6 November
Orica presented a response to the recommendations made by IMC Core Member, Prof Ian Acworth, regarding groundwater modelling, ecological monitoring locations and saline intrusion.
Prof Brian Priestly also presented his view on the incremental health risks associated with the reported dioxin emissions from the GTP (Task No. 2).
8 May
This was the first combined meeting of the IMC and the CLC. The CLC members were provided with an opportunity to discuss their expectations of IMC members, and issued the first four tasks for the IMC to conduct. A discussion on the role of the independent validation auditor was also discussed.
IMC Meetings
In accordance with the Terms of Reference (32kb), IMC meetings are held at least twice a year to review performance in general.

IMC Participation at CLC Meetings
Apart from the combined meetings where the full committee meets with the CLC, the CLC may request specific IMC members to attend a CLC Meeting to provide presentations on specific tasks.

CLC Tasks for the IMC
As per the Terms of Reference, the IMC provides independent technical advice to the CLC with respect to Orica's Groundwater Cleanup Project. During CLC Meetings, CLC members can request that a specific task be undertaken by the IMC on issues of concern relating directly to the Groundwater Cleanup Project. Tasks are likely to be directed to individuals of the IMC rather than the whole committee.
Summary of Tasks
The following is a summary of the tasks that have been issued. Written reports are sometimes produced as an end product of a specific task. These reports are available to be downloaded below.
