SH&E Management Plan

Notice of Clean Up Action and Orica Groundwater Cleanup Plan

After initial surveys identified the extent of groundwater contamination at the Botany site, Orica initiated further studies and conducted trials to help determine the most effective and safest way to clean up the groundwater.

Remediation plans were developed as further studies continued through the 1990s. On 26 September 2003, the then NSW Environment Protection Agency (EPA), now part of the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water (DECCW), issued a Notice of Clean Up Action (NCUA), Notice No 1030236, to Orica. In accordance with condition 3B of the NCUA, Orica submitted a Groundwater Cleanup Plan to the EPA in October 2003. Once approved by the EPA, Orica immediately began work to implement the Plan. This work continues.

The Groundwater Cleanup Plan describes Orica's remediation strategies and provides indicative project schedules for each project module. Challenges and issues are also highlighted in the Plan. Orica provides quarterly progress reports on the implementation of the Plan, including details of monitoring of surface water and groundwater. Summaries of these progress reports (briefing papers) are presented to the Community Liaison Committee.
