Southlands Remediation & Development Project

Orica proposes to develop the Southlands site at Banksmeadow. The following webpages have been established to share information about the Southlands Remediation and Development Project, consultation activities to date and opportunities available for providing feedback or seeking further information.

What is Southlands?

Southlands is an approximately 20 hectare site owned by Orica. It is situated directly south-west of the Botany Industrial Park and fronts McPherson Street, Banksmeadow. The site lies entirely within the Botany Bay Local Government Area. It is zoned '4(a) Industrial' under the Botany Local Environmental Plan 1995, and is located approximately 1 km away from the Port of Botany and 500 m north of the northern shores of Botany Bay.

Southlands is split into two blocks (known as Block 1 and Block 2), which are separated by Springvale Drain. With the exception of groundwater extraction wells, monitoring wells and associated pipe work, the site is vacant.

Proposed Development

Orica proposes to develop Southlands in stages for high quality industrial and warehouse purposes. Future use of the land will incorporate all necessary infrastructure required for Orica's ongoing groundwater cleanup works and will in no way compromise Orica's ongoing commitment to the Botany Groundwater Cleanup Project.

A draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the project was lodged with the NSW Department of Planning for its review on 19 December 2008 and the final EA was submitted in late August 2009. A public exhibition of the EA extended from 2 September to 7 October 2009 for 30 days.

People who have followed this project over recent years will be aware that Goodman International Limited (Goodman) was involved in the project development. Orica is now proceeding as sole Proponent of the development. Some references to Goodman remain in some documents and drawings posted on this website. Final EA is currently being finalised for public exhibition. If the project is approved, and once remediation is complete, Orica intends to review sale and development options for the Southlands property in accordance with any consent granted and Goodman may be further involved.
